What is Mentalization Based Therapy?

Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) is a type of talk therapy that helps you understand what is going on in your own mind and the minds of others. "Mentalizing" is just a fancy word for "thinking about thinking." It’s the ability to see that our actions are driven by our feelings, thoughts, and needs. Sometimes, when we are very stressed or upset, we lose this ability. We might jump to conclusions about why someone is mad at us, or we might act out our own feelings without really knowing why we feel that way.

In MBT sessions, we work together like detectives to figure out the "why" behind your reactions. Instead of just focusing on what happened during your week, we look at the emotions behind the events. For example, if a friend didn't text you back and you felt a surge of anger, we would pause and explore that moment. We try to see if that anger came from a thought like "they don't care about me," and then we check to see if that thought is actually true or just a feeling passing through.

The goal of this therapy is to help you feel more in control of your relationships and your moods. When you get better at mentalizing, you don’t get "flooded" by your emotions as easily. You start to realize that other people have their own complicated inner lives, which helps you feel less hurt by their actions. It creates a sense of calm and curiosity, allowing you to navigate the world with more confidence and fewer misunderstandings.
